Angels rest oregon hike8/14/2023 By the time we had completed this 1.3 mile segment we were pretty soaked from the damp leaves that we brushed against. This trail obviously doesn’t see much traffic and was fairly overgrown but usable. The round trip to Angel’s Rest is about 4.6 miles so we had planned on combining this hike with the Wahkeena Falls trail a couple of miles to the east via the Foxglove trail. When we first arrived here we were in the midst of some very low clouds which obstructed our views but they eventually moved on allowing us to see across the river to Washington. It was much wider than we had expected and we spent some time exploring around the area and because we arrived early we had it all to ourselves. We were surprised by the width of Angel’s Rest when we arrived at the bluff. After passing Coopey Falls views begin to open of the Columbia River to the west especially as you reach a rock field crossing. The trail was lined with flowers along the way, mostly larkspur and columbine but many different varieties were present. The trail set off in a damp green forest and made it’s way on a steady climb up to Angel’s Rest, a rocky bluff overlooking the Columbia River. The weather was typical of our experience hiking in the area, low clouds and mild temps. There was only one car in the parking area which we knew would change by the time we hiked back out given the popularity of the Gorge trails. After seeing the amount of snow on the road to the Wildcat Mountain trail head we decided to alter our plans a bit and headed to the Columbia Gorge instead.ĭespite the side trip we arrived at the Angel’s Rest trail head (Bridal Veil exit 28 off I-84) before 7:30am. A fact we discovered on the way to our most recent hike. After enjoying a couple of weeks of summer like weather snow returned to some of the lower elevations. From Bridal Veil State Park, head about 0.5 mile east, with parking on the left. The weather threw us a curve ball this last week. Parking is on the right hand side of the highway. From Wahkeena Falls, head west apprximately 2.5 miles. Interstate 84 westbound (from Hood River): Take exit #35, keep going straight off the freeway, and take the Historic Highway just under 7.5 miles to the trailhead parking described above.Ĭolumbia River Highway approach: The trailhead is accessed from the historic highways. Hang a hard right right, heading west on the highway (signed for "Crown Point"), and then almost immediately take another right into the nice big parking area signed for Angel's Rest. Continue uphill about 0.3 mile to the intersection with the Historic Highway. Ignore the righthand turn to the post office. Getting ThereInterstate 84 eastbound (from Portland): Take exit #28 for Bridal Veil. You will get some fresh air and your heart rate up a bit, and still only be gone for about 3 hours! You really can't beat it. Or just drive out, power up and back, and head back home. Haul up some coffee or a lunch or some fine scotch, hunker down at the often windy top, and enjoy a world-class view of the western Gorge. The trail is not too steep, but it's enough to make for a nice little workout. What makes it so wonderful is that it is easy to get to it's hikeable year round the trail goes across landslides, over a creek, past a waterfall, through burned areas that now sport great autumn color, over some exposed rocks, and out to an amazing viewpoint all in under 2.5 miles one way and thanks to the burn and a handful of other ecological factors, the trail boasts a pretty high variety of plants that put on shows at different times of the year. What makes this hike so wonderful is not any sense of remoteness or wilderness (you can see and/or hear I-84 most of the hike). Just about 30 minutes from most parts of Portland lies a gem of a hike to Angel's Rest.
